I hear comments all the time that girls are so much fun...I agree wholeheartedly! However, these comments are often followed by the reasoning that there are so many fun things to make for girls. Agreed! And then I hear, what can you make for boys?!
I'm dedicating Fridays to answering that question...because Fridays are for the fellas! I have found so many fun things that I have made, or want to make for my guys. And even more fun activities that a mom can do with her boy.
So to kick this off, here's the newest cape I made for my littlest guy. My guys love playing dress up. They have superhero costumes, football costumes, pirates, cowboys, Toy Story, Star Wars, fireman, police...they love it. That was not something that occurred to me before having boys. I always tied the idea of dress up with girls and princess stuff, etc. Anyway, my littlest doesn't have a cape (catastrophe)! I made one for each of his brothers before he was born and decided he needed one too...after all doesn't every boy need a superhero cape?!
Here is his!
It took me less than an hour and a little bit of fabric to put a smile on this superhero's face!
Supplies:
5/8 of a yard of cotton fabric in his favorite color (x2 if you want it double sided)
Velcro
sewing machine or stitch witchery
Step One:
Fold fabric in half and draw a U shape for the neck and then extend the line down opposite side of the fold long enough for your superhero. I used one of his t-shirts to make sure that the opening would be big enough. I also did this on the wrong side of fabric so that my lines wouldn't be seen (I guess they're barely seen in the picture too)! o-well.
Step two:
If doing a double sided cape, trace the pattern you just made on the second color.
Step three:
Trace a circle on the left over fabric of each color and then add an initial or symbol. Next I headed to my sewing machines to sew it all together. I first sewed on each of the circles on the right side of the fabric and sewed around the letter. Then placed the right sides together and sewed it all up...make sure to leave an opening so that you can turn it right side out!
And there you have it...a double sided superhero cape! I'm just going to add some Velcro by the neck so that it will stay on and iron out the big creases while I wait for my superhero to wake up!
If you don't have a sewing machine, you can still make your guys a cape. When I made these I didn't have a sewing machine yet and just simply cut out the cape shape, circle, and initial. Then added the circle and initial on with stitch witchery...easy peasy!
I'm pretty sure this is something that your little guy will love. Isn't that what it's all about?! Now go and enjoy your superhero, I'm going to go enjoy all 3 of mine! Before you know it, those superhero days will be gone...that's not something I like to think about!
