So How Long Do You Boil A Hard Boiled Egg?

34
Easter is quickly approaching and with that Easter eggs are needing to be colored and that means eggs need to be boiled. For the longest time, I thought to boil an egg you just needed to plop it in some water boil it for a while and there you have it. WRONG!

If you don't get it just right, the eggs crack, they are hard to peel, you end up peeling the egg all the way to the yolk, and they just don't work. Who wants to put effort into something that doesn't work? Not me.

(Yes, boiled is written all over the carton! I didn't want any confusion!)

So here is the method I've used the last couple of times we've boiled eggs and it has worked great!
***please note we live in very high altitude (7500 ft) and I imagine because of chemistry of eggs and heat that I don't really understand it might be different in a lower altitude.
If you don't have an egg coloring kit, did you know you can color eggs with Kool-Aid?! That's right...just add 2/3 cup of water to a kool-aid packet. We did it like this last year because for some reason we had so much kool-aid. It gave vibrant colors but was a little splotchy.

You can also color eggs with food coloring...1/2 cup of boiling water, 1 tsp of vinegar and about 20 drops of food coloring will do the trick.

I have always love coloring eggs. I love watching the colors change and getting creative with different designs. We won't be doing ours until Friday this year...and I can't wait! Even though it's a bit messy with little ones, the smiles on their faces and the memories are totally worth it. I love that it's a science project, an art project, and just plain fun!
